If we represented our inner world and world around us (other people, circumstances, life events) as a territory or terrain, then we could say that psychological processes create a map that we use in order to navigate through this territory. As there is no perfect map, each is just more or less good representation of the territory, we can get lost from time to time. We all know the feeling of being lost, disoriented, insecure or even frightened of each next step into wandering.
Continuing this analogy, psychotherapy would be a way to reconstruct our map in order to serve us better to get going. In this process, psychotherapist would be both a co-constructor of the map and a companioning guide through unknown terrain to help us redesign the map. Authentic psychotherapy alliance, built on trust, understanding and support, is essential for this journey to be successful. As we all know the feeling of getting lost, we can also recognise the feeling of relief and the sense of security when, with the help of our map, we find the right path.
